Xarelto® (Ribaroxaban), approved to treat pulmonary embolism in 2011 by the FDA, is a new generation of anticoagulant and has been marketed as a better alternative to Warfarin, because it did not require restrictive dieting and routine blood testing. Xarelto Bleeding Injuries and Multiple Lawsuits
Since its approval in 2011, Xarelto has been used as an alternative to the other anticoagulant Warfarin, which requires routine blood testing and restrictive dieting. Although Xarelto is one of the most highly prescribed blood-thinners on the market, there are numerous people affected by serious Xarelto bleeding injuries.
Xarelto is used to reduce the risk of blood clots or strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). It is also prescribed to treat pulmonary embolisms (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, some wrongful death cases have been filed against the German manufacturer Bayer Healthcare and the distributor Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Plaintiffs are alleging that their loved ones suffered and/or died as a result of Xarelto bleeding injuries and that the manufacturers did not adequately research and disclose the dangers associated with Xarelto.

Who Is Liable?
Despite the pending lawsuits the manufacturers are planning to expand the market for Xarelto, through clinical trials, which may enable Xarelto to be approved for treating several other conditions. This initiative gives great cause for concern, since the serious side effects associated with Xarelto have still not been addressed. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a private group focused on public safety, issued a quarterly report in May of 2014, “Anticoagulant drugs are a high-risk treatment and cause bleeding in approximately 15% of patients exposed to AFib for a year.” The article expressed concerns about the risks of Xarelto bleeding injuries, as well as Pradaxa.
The list of harms that Xarelto causes to users is extensive, and the manufacturers have chosen not to provide appropriate warnings about Xarelto side effects. Therefore, these multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies should be held liable for the bleeding injuries and wrongful deaths that Xarelto has caused users.
Xarelto bleeding injuries symptoms may include:
- Unexpected bleeding or bleeding that lasts longer than normal;
- Dizziness, weakness and fainting;
- Coughing of blood and vomiting;
- Muscles spasms, numbness, and tingling; and
- Loss of body movement.
If you experienced any of these symptoms, you must seek immediate medical attention. In addition, you need good and prompt product liability legal representation. Please give the Abbott Law Group a call today and one of our product liability lawyers will be able to assist you.
Recent Xarelto Lawsuits for 2014
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant on the market, also referred to as a blood thinner, and has been the cause of numerous incidents of side effects and deaths since its approval in 2011. A large number of people have suffered injuries from Xarelto and have filed lawsuits seeking justice.

Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare AG (Bayer) and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Janssen). It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011. The prescription medicine has three primary purposes as follows:
- reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke in patients;
- treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT); and
- treat pulmonary embolisms (PE) in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery.
However, several patients and their doctors have reported severe side effects involving the use of Xarelto. Some of these side effects have resulted in numerous deaths and that number is steadily increasing. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Xarelto was associated with an increased risk of bleeding. Xarelto, unlike other blood thinners, has no reversal agent and it is very difficult for doctors to stop the bleeding in patients, especially during an emergency.
A spokesperson for Bayer said that the company stands behind the safety of Xarelto. In the meantime, the company is facing some serious lawsuits. Currently, the Xarelto lawsuits are in the early stages of litigation with more expected to be filed against the company.

Lawsuit for Uncontrolled Bleeding Injuries from Xarelto
Xarelto is a blood thinner manufactured by Bayer Healthcare AG and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceutical, Inc. Xarelto was developed as an innovative approach in the treatment of blood clot and stroke prevention. However, the side effects from taking Xarelto cause severe injuries that have affected hundreds of people triggering a number of lawsuits against the companies. The Abbott Law Group has the expertise to help anyone file a Xarelto lawsuit. Please call our toll free number or complete the free case evaluation form on our website. What Type of Injuries Does Xarelto Cause in Patients?
Xarelto was promoted as an anticoagulant that would not require blood tests and constant monitoring to detect blood clots in patients, as was the case in Warfarin a similar anticoagulant that was developed decades ago. For this reason, it became the most popular blood thinner on the market.
Nonetheless, Xarelto may not be safe and could cause blood related conditions in patients such as uncontrolled bleeding, cerebral hemorrhage and rectal bleeding. The uncontrolled bleeding is irreversible since the medication has no antidote to correct the condition. It is best to avoid activities that may cause you to bleed or bruise. If any of these injuries occur, it may take longer than usual to stop the bleeding. This uncontrolled bleeding may occur from obvious areas like your nose or gums, but may also occur in unseen areas like your abdomen, stomach, and intestines. The risk of uncontrolled bleeding increases in older patients and in those who have kidney or liver problems. This abnormal blood condition ultimately puts the patient at a high risk for loss of bodily functions leading to death.
Who is Liable for Xarelto-Induced Injuries?
Bayer and Janssen (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) marketed Xarelto aggressively without performing the proper testing and providing adequate warning about its side effects. According to the Wall Street Journal, the companies plan to launch clinical trials of the anticoagulant in an attempt to widen the market for a product that is poised to exceed $1 billion in sales this year. The study is to test the anticlotting agent in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which involves chest pain leading to a heart attack. The newspaper article also stated that a previous study that yielded positive results was presented to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve Xarelto for ACS patients. However, the FDA rejected the proposals three times, because of flawed data that was presented, causing the agency to be uncertain about the risks and benefits. Also in 2013, the Institute for Safe Medicines Practices, a watchdog group, issued a report that showed the number of serious adverse events for Xarelto had surpassed those for Pradaxa, another anticoagulant on the market. These and other reports have made it clear that the manufacturers of Xarelto should be held liable for the injuries caused to patients.
Getting Legal Help and Settlement for Xarelto-Induced Damages
The side effects from Xarelto are very similar to those of Pradaxa. Its German based pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingleheim recently settled a class action lawsuit for over $600 million. It may be a good indication that a Xarelto lawsuit could be settled for the same amount or higher with Bayer and Janssen.
Therefore, if you or someone you know has suffered injuries from taking Xarelto, please contact the Abbott Law Group for a free consultation on your case. Our experienced lawyers will determine if you are eligible for a settlement and help you obtain compensation for your injuries.
